In the 2018 Census in Motueka, only 2.4% of the community reported speaking te reo Māori. In response to this statistic, Te Puna Reo identified the need for cross-generational learning to support parents and caregivers in learning and speaking te reo Māori alongside their babies, children, and grandchildren.

For this project, we partnered with The Village Cafe Motueka to create a short course, which provided a safe space for parents and caregivers to learn practical reo Māori for their homes. The course structure was inspired by a full day spent with a child or grandchild, starting with morning greetings and ending with bedtime. Over 20 parents, caregivers, and their tamariki completed this introductory course free of charge. View course impact in statistics here.

We were proud to lead the resource design, research, translations across eight unique weekly topics, and in-person course delivery.
