Learn how and where it all began

Manawa Māori makes learning Māori simple with a learner-first approach—and we believe our journey resonates with many worldwide. Starting in traditional classrooms, our founder quickly reimagined what learning could be. Today, we help learners connect with te reo Māori in ways that fit modern life.

In 2021, our founder, Ella Sargent, began learning Māori at a local polytechnic. She quickly realised the challenges of learning a language in active revitalisation, particularly for those balancing professional and family responsibilities. Many learners struggled to progress due to lack of exposure and immersion—key components of successful language acquisition.

Determined to overcome these barriers, Ella launched the Manawa Māori Instagram page. Using technology and social media—tools many of us engage with daily—her goal was to break down common obstacles, such as limited access to classes and resources, by creating a supportive online space with frequent access to Māori resources and consistent feed exposure. Within the first year, Manawa Māori reached thousands across Aotearoa, with learners embracing our effective "3-5 phrase strategy."

In 2022, we began offering beginner Māori lessons to complement the free content shared online, which helped grow our learner community and led to the launch of our first product: emotion flashcards. This marked the beginning of Manawa Māori as a business. Today, our team provides courses, resources, and support to thousands of learners worldwide, dedicated to keeping te reo Māori thriving across homes, workplaces, and communities.

Who We Are

Since our inception, we've been nurturing the seeds sown by our ancestors while ensuring our experiences connect with learners of various ages, levels, and backgrounds.

Our motif encapsulates our story, mission, and vision: to protect, nurture, and foster the growth of these seeds. At Manawa Māori, we believe that everyone has the potential to learn and grow when they are empowered, supported, and inspired.

The mangōpare at the base of our motif symbolises the resilience and strong foundation of our community. The larger mangōpare above represents the shelter our platform provides, offering learners a safe and supportive space to grow. This open design reflects the abundance of our natural surroundings and the endless opportunities they hold. At the centre of the motif is the poutama, embodying the seed of knowledge that lies within every learner. It symbolises the journey of growth and the flourishing of knowledge over a lifetime. We appreciate that this journey is more than learning—it's about connection, empowerment, and transformation.

  • Adaptability has been at the core of our journey from the very beginning. From Ella's first beginner lessons at university to developing a premium Community Membership that supports learners worldwide, we've grown alongside the evolving needs of our learners, communities, and clients.

  • Language is essential to culture and identity, shaping how we understand the world around us. Our team delivers premium resources and services backed by verified language expertise, quality assurance, and peer reviews.

  • Authenticity is our commitment to preserving the integrity of te reo Māori, its cultural origins, and the communities we serve, especially amid revitalisation. Our approach is rooted in real-life experiences, offering learners practical opportunities to engage with te reo Māori in ways that empower them to succeed on their language-learning journey.
